Ouille Beach, a 3 km trail from le Racou

Between Argelès-sur-Mer and Collioure, Ouille Beach can be reached on foot via the coastal path. From le Racou, allow for about a 3 km and 45-minute walk before reaching this small sand and pebble cove, nestled at the foot of the cliffs. Starting from our campsite in Argelès-sur-Mer, Camping Le Méditerranée, this walk is one of the most beautiful nature outings of your stay.

Routes, equipment, swimming: here is everything you need to know before you go.

Ouille Beach in 5 points

  • Ouille Beach belongs to the commune of Collioure, very close to the border with Argelès-sur-Mer.
  • The coastal path connects the le Racou district to the cove in 3 km, or about a 45-minute walk.
  • A mix of sand and pebbles lines this small bay sheltered by shale cliffs.
  • As for swimming, the cove operates without a lifeguard station: everyone swims at their own risk.
  • Closed-toe shoes, water, and a hat are the basic equipment, as shade is rare along the route.

A wild cove at the gateway to the Côte Vermeille

Ouille Beach marks the transition between two landscapes. To the north stretch the long sandy beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer; to the south begin the rocky coves of the Côte Vermeille. Part of Collioure, this small bay is tucked into a jagged coastline, where the dark shale plunges directly into crystal-clear water.

The setting consists of just a few elements: a sand and pebble beach, cliffs covered in Mediterranean vegetation, and the sea on the horizon. Furthermore, pedestrian access naturally filters the number of visitors. As a result, even in the height of summer, the atmosphere is much more peaceful than on the large urban beaches.

For snorkeling enthusiasts, the rocks on either side of the cove provide a great spot for observation.

Reaching Ouille Beach on foot via the coastal path

Two starting points allow you to reach Ouille Beach on foot, both on the coastal path that runs along the coast between Argelès and Collioure.

From le Racou, the family route

The easiest start is at the le Racou beach parking lot. The le Racou-Ouille section is 3 km long and takes about 45 minutes to walk. Along the way, the path passes the le Racou orientation table, then follows the Porteils coves and their small pebble beaches. The route is suitable for children, though there are a few steep sections along the cliff edge.

From Collioure, via the forts

In the other direction, the path leaves Collioure heading north and passes near Fort Carré and Fort Rond. The full le Racou-Collioure link is 4.4 km on a well-marked shale path.

Good to know: shade is rare on the coastal path. In summer, the Argelès-sur-Mer Tourist Office advises walking in the morning or late afternoon, with a bottle of water and a hat. On the way back to le Racou, the evening light colors the shale cliffs: a beautiful finale to a day at the beach!

What to pack for a day at Ouille Beach?

A day at Ouille Beach should be prepared like a short hike, as the cove is located away from shops and services. Before leaving, our campsite team at Camping Le Méditerranée recommends that guests pack in their bags:

  • Closed-toe walking shoes ensure a good grip on the shale.
  • A well-filled water bottle per person covers the way there, the swim, and the return.
  • A hat and sunscreen protect from the sun on a very exposed route.
  • A mask and snorkel transform a swim into a session for observing the rocky seabed.
  • A trash bag allows you to take everything back and preserve this fragile site.

Our advice: for a first discovery with children, the le Racou-Ouille round trip is more than enough. Allow for 1 hour and 30 minutes of walking in total, with a long swimming break in the middle, and the whole family will return in great shape. More seasoned walkers can continue to Collioure for a gourmet break in the village before taking the path back north.

A preserved cove in the morning, a dip in our 480 m² pool in the afternoon: why choose? Rated 5 stars, our 5.5-hectare pedestrianized and wooded estate is located 1.5 km from the sea, accessible by bike or shuttle. Between two walks on the coastal path and your days on the beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer, book your accommodation at Camping Le Méditerranée and create a stay at your own pace.

FAQ – Your questions about Ouille Beach

Is Ouille Beach supervised?

Ouille Beach operates without a lifeguard station or lifeguards, both in and out of season. Swimming is therefore at your own risk. To swim in a supervised area, the large beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer, a few kilometers further north, have lifeguard stations from early June to mid-September.

Is Ouille Beach accessible by car?

Yes, a small road from the D114 allows you to approach Ouille Beach, with very limited parking in summer. The coastal path from Le Racou is therefore the most serene option, especially in high season.

Is Ouille Beach suitable for children?

Yes, Ouille Beach is suitable for children who are used to walking. The Argelès-sur-Mer Tourist Office describes the path as accessible to children, with a few steep sections along the cliff edge. Plan for closed-toe shoes, close supervision on the steep portions, and regular breaks.
